Driving Change Through Lived Experience

Active Inclusion is a community built on the principle of co-production and our skills in creative thinking and storytelling. Our work is led by lived experience peer support specialists. Our work is not about abstract theory, it’s about actively creating equity in employment by translating our own journeys into tangible, person and capacity-centred solutions.

Our Approach

Our approach is distinct because it is rooted in real-life experiences, ensuring our activities directly address the complexities of employment barriers.

Our Focus

Our key activities focus on:

  • Challenging the Status Quo
We create spaces that question assumptions that limit, and policies or services that fail to deliver genuine inclusion on the ground – we show the ‘unintended consequences’ and incidental impact of these on our employment opportunities and lives.
  • Our Agency, Voice and Control
We are dedicated to providing a safe (or as safe as it can be) space for participants in activities, so they have control over their experience and their voices are heard, respected, and listened to.
  • Creating Person and Capacity-Centred Tools
We develop practical, empathetic models and resources that prioritise the individual’s needs and context, moving beyond tick-box compliance.

Unique Experience

Here are some key outcomes of our activities. These are for all of us (you, us and people we interact with in work or life):

  • Advocate with agency
Our activities are designed to support us to have agency so we know: ‘What’s a “Happy” Workplace?’ And how we can get there safely.
  • Have Social Impact
Our activities support people to feel valued, equal, and connected.
  • Building Capacity
    Our activities support us –
    We are the community.
We develop our activities and projects.
We may be looking for work, or in work or looking to upskill.
As a result we are (through our actions: paid, pro bono, voluntary) building capacity in our communities, workplaces and lives.

Our Impact

Our impact is changing our attitude as people, our approaches to work, and creating work opportunities. Our activity has been co-produced from the beginning with our theory of change. We share some of our work and impact here. You will find we are creative and open, and everyone who takes part becomes part of the community.

Unconference

On 23rd July 2024, the Active Inclusion team ran an ‘Unconference’ called ‘What’s a “Happy” Workplace?’ hosted in person at Clifford Chance, London.

The aim of our unconference was to create a safe environment, based on participation rather than a traditional passive audience, coming together to share honestly what would make a happy workplace.

Our Theory of Change

In 2023 we started the co-production pilot: Active Inclusion: Equity in Employment. Discover more about our journey.
